1.&nbsp; We are one of the few rentals in Fredericksburg that allows ATV's on-site so please follow these simple rules.&nbsp;Absolutely no trailers inside the courtyard area. Drop and unload all trailers
outside the courtyard in the designated area. The designated area is on the
right as you get close to the courtyard gate. All our fences and gates are all custom-designed /custom-made and you will be charged full replacement costs + $150 inconvenience fee for any damages you cause with your trailer inside our courtyard area.&nbsp; The terrain can be very rocky and steep -- be aware that rollovers are very possible. The Owners are released from any liability and the Guest releases the Owners from any harm including any accidents, rollovers, or injuries while you operate your ATV / UTV.&nbsp;2. Observe all Texas State
laws regarding ATV’s/UTV’s. Also, do not consume alcoholic beverages while operating an ATV / UTV. All drivers must be legally licensed/ have the proper safety certificate. 
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ATV’s/UTV’s must be used
off property (except for our driveway) -- please do not tear up our property, erode grading, or run over&nbsp;our vegetation. Keese Rd. has many paths to take so enjoy!

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You can store your ATV/
UTV under the covered barn if you would like.
5.&nbsp; &nbsp; You can rinse of any mud / dirt
off the barn slab.&nbsp;We have a hose on the side of the barn.
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No ATV’s/UTV’s on the
lawn grass.

 Below
 is a Polaris grand tour we often give to our children and friends. It’s a long
 tour and could take you 2 hours or more with all the stops, but it is a great
 way to explore the surrounding areas, enjoy the sights, and go on a local
 picnic. Always follow all state laws and remember to wear your seat belts. Many
 of the roads are windy hairpins so please use caution and drive at your own
 risk. Check your tank – the total round trip is about 18 miles!

 The Outpost main entrance turn left onto Keese Rd. Turn right on Welgehausen
 Rd. On Welgehausen Rd. there are some awesome views of Enchanted Rock you can’t
 get anywhere else. Go to the end of Welgehausen Rd. Turn right onto RR 965. This
 can be a busy road, so stay on the shoulder, if you go on the road like we do,
 then that’s up to you, just make sure you’re wearing your seat belts. Go left
 across RR 965 onto Lower Crabapple Rd. and continue to stay left. Check out the
 historic St. John Lutheran Church
 and the historic Crabapple School, then turn around. Stay left and go down to a
 beautiful part of Crabapple Creek. Go up to RR 965 and turn left. Stay on the
 shoulder, go across, or go on the road, again it’s up to you. Follow this
 awhile and you will pass a vineyard on your left. Keep going and turn left onto
 Keese Rd. Make an immediate left onto Gypsum Mine Rd. There are many scenic
 areas during this drive. Once you see the gypsum mine on your left, stop off on
 the right side of the road. There is a large dirt berm marking the outer
 boundary of the mine and it’s loaded with gypsum crystals. Backtrack the way
 you came and make a left on Keese Rd. Stop off at Crabapple Creek. There are
 lots of rock specimens and sometimes arrowheads. Keep your eye out for cattle
 and wild animals coming down for a drink. Also watch where you are stepping as
 there might be cow poop. Head back to The Outpost when you are done! Enjoy!

ATV Grand Tour Route

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2024/11/vbvkH2c6kHKU4ucVjREJUfNU.jpg">Black Bears are steadily moving back into the Big Bend area of the Trans Pecos, the Hill Country, the Panhandle, and deep Northeast Texas. In fact, Black bears have been spotted all across the Texas Hill Country, and sightings are becoming more common. In 2022, there were 154 confirmed sightings, up from 25 in 2000. On December 23 of 2024, we recorded images on our wildlife trail camera of Black Bears and have also identified their scat on the property. Although appealing and generally harmless, Black Bears can injure humans when provoked and should be treated with caution. Black Bears tend to act more like goofy raccoons, and they are only after your food. They are on the endangered species list and you are prohibited from injuring or killing these animals. It is also illegal to hunt Black Bears. Despite its name, the Black Bear's coat can be jet black to cinnamon brown, depending on genetic selection in the local population. Adults reach a length of 5 to 6 feet, height at the shoulder of 2 to 3 feet, and weigh 200-300 pounds. Front claws are generally longer than hind claws. The fur is long and coarse. At home in the woods and forests, Black Bears are capable of climbing trees, but adult bears generally prefer remaining on the ground. Although classified as a carnivore, the Black Bear is a true omnivore, opportunistically feeding on a wide range of food items. Analysis of scat (bear droppings) shows that vegetable material almost always comprises over half the bear's diet, with insects and other animals comprising a small percentage. In particular, fresh leaves, fruits, berries, nuts, roots, and tubers are favorite foods seasonally, with insects and small mammals eaten when the opportunity arises. It's easy to see where bears have been. They frequently break the branches of nut-bearing trees while feeding and tear up the ground looking for insects, roots, prickly pear fruit, or tubers. Black Bears in Texas especially relish the succulent base of the sotol plant (Dasylirion). In desert environments, it's common to find partially eaten sotol plants where bears have been. Bears will also strip the bark from trees while looking for insects or juicy pulp and will often rub themselves on rough bark. The Bear Necessities: 1.	Never hand-feed or approach bears. Keep a safe distance. 2.	Secure the garbage can lids with the straps. 3.	Remove any food off the porches, picnic area, or around the firepit. 4.	Do not leave food in your vehicles. 5.	Do not leave coolers outside. 6.	Do not leave dog food outside. 7.	Clean off the grills and remove the waste. Close grill lids. 8.	Bears can climb, so the gates/fences will not keep them out of the courtyard.

Outpost is no exception. The heaviest times of cedar pollination are January
and February. We’ve taken the time to clear out much of the cedar directly next
to the cabin, but its impossible to mitigate cedar pollen as it can travel
hundreds of miles. We use HEPA filters in our A/C system and housekeeping also
uses HEPA filters. The good news is that cedar is a natural mosquito repellent and there are no mosquitoes at The Outpost!

Please note that everything is winterized with heating blankets, insulation, and heat wire. Here are some tips to consider:1. If the water pressure turns into a trickle, its becuase the cold weather either frooze the water softener, or tripped the water well pump breaker. Both have quick solutions so please call us at: 832-375-5411, or after hours at: 830-271-4130.2.&nbsp;If the outside temperature is below 33° degrees,
please switch the&nbsp; A/C from. ‘Heat’ to ‘Em Heat.’ The outdoor heat pump does not work
very well in freezing temperatures. The backup. ‘Em Heat’ pump is in the attic,
and you will notice that it blows much lighter than the outdoor heat pump. To
do this, select ‘Mode’ on the bottom left of the thermostat until you see, ‘EM
Heat.’3. There are two&nbsp;ice scrapers in the kitchen island drawer.4. Keese Rd. can ice over -- completely. You will need to drive about 5 miles an hour as no crews can make it out safely to de-ice or to clear the road. Also, RR965 can freeze over all the way to Cross Mountain.5. There is plenty of firewoood for the indoor fireplace. It works so well that it can heat the entire kitchen &amp; living room!6. COTTONTAIL BUNNY HABITATS
The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit is very common throughout the
Texas Hill Country. You may come across a nest of baby bunnies – please do not
disturb them! In fact, there is one in the middle of the firewood rack. This is
nest of Eastern Cottontail bunnies and they have not been abandoned nor are
they in any danger. In fact, many wild animals call The Outpost home as they
know predators will stay away from humans. You will see the 2 mothers running
about on the driveway and on the lawn at night. You may observe and photograph
them, but please minimize any disturbance. Also, please be watchful of your
dogs as they will be attracted to their smell and may attempt to pick them up. 

Here Are A Few Cottontail Facts:

 <li>These are wild animals – they are not domesticated
 rabbits.</li>
 <li>Baby rabbits are very cute and it is natural to
 want to handle them; however, they are very easily stressed by handling
 and noise. Any undue stress can cause them to have heart failure. &nbsp;</li>
 <li>Rabbits will still care for their babies even if
 they have been touched by human hands.</li>
 <li>Mother rabbits only nurse their babies for
 approximately 5 minutes twice a day.</li>
 <li>The mothers return to the nest once or twice a day
 in the evening or at night letting the babies appear abandoned and
 orphaned so as not to call attention to the nest for predators.</li>
 <li>The eastern cottontail rabbit is most active at
 night. </li>
 <li>They can run up to 18 miles an hour.</li></ol>

You may see what appears to be fur on the walls or trees during the hotter months of June, July &amp; August -- do not disturb these! They are actually huddled masses of non-poisonous daddy long legs (Harvestmen) and that is not fur -- they are legs -- thousands of them!&nbsp;They are classified as arachnids, but they are not spiders; rather, they are&nbsp;opilionids. Unlike spiders, they have a fused body, they&nbsp;lack silk, they have no fangs, and do not possess any venom glands.The reason they are huddling is to create a microclimate of moisture during hot days. This is normal, natural behavior to keep themselves from drying out.If you disturb them, they will unhuddle and the entire area will be covered with thousands of them. DO NOT TOUCH AND DO NOT KILL THEM -- AND PLEASE DO NOT SPRAY THEM WITH ANYTHING!These insects are highly beneficial in maintaining balance in our ecosystem by keeping down scorpions, fleas, flies, ticks, fire ants, silverfish, termites, and other harmful insects. Also, their bodies are too large to infiltrate the weather seals throughout the cabin so they cannot get inside. Please pay attention to burn bans and the high winds. Use the firestarter
bricks to light a fire – do not use gasoline (you can use lighter fluid). Please use only the firewood
that is provided – you may also use wood that has fallen to the ground. Do not
cut limbs or cut trees. Do not throw ammunition or pressurized cans into the
firepit. Do not place metal or glass in the firepit – these will not burn.
Please spray down the firepit with water when leaving. Always place the screen
back on when finished with the firepit. Never throw ashes or wood into the
garbage cans. Leave all ashes and wood in the firepit so the cleaning crew can
dispose of them properly. An ash can is provided in case the firepit becomes
too full.

are several Gray and Red Fox dens along the fence lines and surrounding areas at The
Outpost. You may come across holes in the ground, such as to the right of the
courtyard gate – please leave these holes alone. The foxes can be viewed
running across the driveway at night, or around the bird seed feeder. You may
also hear the pups in the springtime making what sounds like a whining dog
sound – please do not approach or disturb them! The foxes are not a threat to
humans, and they provide a huge benefit of hunting mice and rats. They are also
fun to watch when they are playing! P.S.: They will eat dog food if it is left
outside!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

All gates are manual due to the environmental conditions at our
 elevation. They all have slide bars to close them, and tie backs in case you
 need to keep them open. There are solar lights to illuminate the location of
 the sliding lock bars at night.

Please keep the Courtyard Gate closed as much as possible to keep out the
 livestock. Our cattle will be grazing during the months of October 1 through March 31.

Nothing! The hot tub is cleaned,&nbsp;drained, shocked, and treated on a regular maintenance
schedule with a certified professional. We use bromine tablets because they have less odor
than chlorine and are not as irritating.&nbsp;There is also a small skimmer net in the stairs for surface particles. Call or message us for any questions.Fun Facts:A few guests have commented on the teal color of the hot
tub water (and even the indoor tub water in the guest bathroom) so we wanted to

Iron, manganese, and calcium carbonate from limestone are
all common minerals that can cause water to range in color from red and orange
to green and blue. You may have noticed the lakes and rivers in the Texas Hill
Country have a&nbsp;stunning teal / turquoise / emerald color – that’s because of
the limestone that is so prevalent throughout the area!

into the Hickory Sandstone Aquifer. The water from this aquifer runs over ancient
limestone and granite. As the water passes over the limestone, the rock is worn
down over time, and the minerals from the limestone are dissolved into the
water causing it to turn into a beautiful teal / turquoise / emerald color which you may

Also, these same minerals cause the water to have a sweet
taste – go ahead and try some from the water dispenser in the refrigerator –
you will not taster better water!
&nbsp;And&nbsp;Here Are The Hot Tub Rules:
1.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;No
eating in the hot tub.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No
bleach, soaps, sun block, detergents, or oils in the hot tub. 
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No animals
in the hot tub.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Children
are not allowed in the hot tub unsupervised.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Always
use the buddy system while in the hot tub.
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do not
use the hot tub if you are pregnant.
7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bubbles
are provided, do not contribute yours.
8.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Because of entrapment
possibility, remove cover completely before entry of bathers.
9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To avoid injury,
exercise care when entering or exiting a spa or hot tub. 
10. No sitting on the lid. Do not use the lid 
as a table. You will be charged full replacement costs (about $550) if you bend, crack, or otherwise damage the lid.
11. Do not allow people
or pets to stand or sit on the cover.&nbsp;
12. Do not open the access panel – you
could get electrocuted.
13. Do not bring small objects in
the hot tub – they can clog the jets.
14. Do not drain the hot tub – call the
owners if there is a water issue.&nbsp;
15. No
diving, jumping, or dunking in the hot tub.
16. Prolonged immersion
in hot water may induce hyperthermia (several
degrees above the normal body temperature of 98.6°F).
17. People
with infectious diseases should not use the hot tub.
18. Do not use the hot tub immediately following strenuous exercise.
19. If you light the firepit, make sure
the firepit screen is in place. This cuts down on ash going into the hot tub.
20. When not in use, put the hot tub
lid on, fasten all 4 clips, fasten the lock bar, and place rocks on all 4 corners.21. If the water drops below the jets, please refill until 1 inch above the jet.


Try
These Steps If The Hot Tub Is Not Heating Up:
1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Do not heat the hot tub past 103 degrees.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
If
the water is changed it will be about 70 degrees, and it takes about 20 hours
to warm up the tub to 100 degrees.
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Make sure the lid is secure. The hot tub will
cool off if the lid is left open. 
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
During winter months the hot tub will take
longer to heat up.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
We have an immersion heater stored in the barn to speed up the heating process. Please call us if you need this
item and we will make the necessary arrangements. 
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Look at the display – do you see the
temperature? If not, push the up arrow and the temperature setting will

injection into the massage jet water flow may be controlled by turning the

Water Level:
If
needed, please add water so that the water level is always above the top jet.
Operating jets without water pressure can break them. Add water 6 to 8 inches
below the top edge of the hot tub. Do not overfill, as the hot tub's water level will rise

maintenance services at The Outpost run on a set schedule, such as lawn cutting,
A/C servicing, generator checks, firewood restocking, propane refills, water
well servicing, etc. We will always try
to schedule these activities during regular housekeeping hours of 11am
check-out and 4pm check-in. 
In the event that there is a critical repair that must be made, such as the HVAC system, we may need to schedule a technician during your stay.&nbsp;The Owners, Lori and Mike Carew, will advise you when
someone is expected to be at the cabin to perform repairs. If a
contractor/vendor needs access inside the cabin, then we will obtain your permission
first. If access is needed outside the cabin, such as for a fallen tree, then we will also obtain your permission in advance. You awalys have the right to decline and we will schedule another time. If we do have your permission, then we will work with you on a time that best fits everyone's needs.

Maintenance At The Outpost

Here are a few reminders regarding our no hunting policy:
The
wildlife on the property is abundant and here for your enjoyment. You are
prohibited from hunting or discharging firearms at The Outpost. You are also
prohibited from target practice or bow hunting. This is a liability issue if
someone is injured or killed due to a firearm/ bow while renting the property.
In
addition, for safety &amp; compliance reasons, the Game Wardens will be called
if firearms/bows are discharged. If we receive a report that you have illegally
poached on our property, your reservation will immediately end, you will be
escorted off the property, and will not receive any refund of any sort. You might
also be arrested or have charges pressed by the Game Wardens if they deem it necessary.

Additional Details:1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
Outpost is not in any line of fire, nor near any line of fire. 
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Texas
whitetail hunting season is from November to January. You will hear rifle fire
in the distance during these months.
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
are no known still/ stalking hunters in the area. The hunting in the area is
done by stand only.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; November
– January: When down by the canyon, do not venture left past the yellow, ‘No
Trespassing’ sign on the trail.&nbsp;

6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When
out by the field, do not walk left near or in front of the second stand, which
is the farthest one away. The stand closet to the road labeled, “Checkpoint
Charlie,” is for wildlife observation and belongs to The Outpost.

portable fire pits on the parking lot due to the mess. Use the on-site grills
for cooking and use the on-site fire pit for chilling out.

You
must clean up any motor oil drips.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Place
all adapters back into the RV Equipment Bag.

the green sewer cap cleanout for black or gray water.

Be
Aware of Scorpions!<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2024/2/wBaStsUy56YZKNXaIUn0ldPj.jpg">
Yer out in the country so there’s all kinds of varmints out
here! The most common scorpion in the area is the Striped Bark Scorpion
(pictured above). Scorpions are nocturnal
creatures as are many of the animals at The Outpost. Although we treat the
yard, patio, and inside the cabin for scorpions, there are some that always get
by. The
sting of a
scorpion is said to be a bit worse than a bee sting, but unless one is
allergic, no medical attention is typically necessary.&nbsp;Although we
spray the yard and the house, as well as lay out glue traps, some scorpions
might still get by (we have also planted lavender in the garden, as well as
place lavender sachets in many drawers, as an herbal preventative for scorpions).
Here’s a few hints to be aware of:
1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Never&nbsp; walk
barefoot in the grass.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We
have provided a UV flashlight for scorpions at night. They will glow
ghost-white when exposed to the UV flashlight (depicted below).
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Check
yer boots.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shake
off bath towels / blankets before using.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Be
careful when handling firewood – examine each piece.
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Scorpions
can run fast, and they strike very quickly.
7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
is a sting kit and sting spray in the master bathroom inside the cupboard.

The Outpost has a propane tank which is used for the gas stove. If you smell gas, please make sure the stove is turned off and then exit the cabin and shut off the main line.If you see, smell or hear a propane leak, report it immediately by calling the Vapo 24-hour hotline at&nbsp;800-469-1040. In an emergency, always dial 911.In the
event that you may need to shut off the water or propane gas mains, here are

Staying awhile and you would like an extra cleaning during your stay? Let us know and we will check to see if we can accommodate you based on the cleaning crew’s calendar. They will need at least 48 hours advance notice to come out there and do a full clean. We do not charge anything extra over the regular cleaning cost and regular hotel tax. Late Check-Out Request

Want to add on another day? That might be possible! Sometimes there are nights before or nights after your stay that are still available in between guest stays. For instance, say you check out Tuesday, Wednesday is open, and then another guest checks in Thursday -- Wednesday would then be considered a gap night. Weekdays normally go for about $165 a night, and weekends normally go for about $349 a night, but we would like to offer any available gap night to you at the discounted price of only $100 plus tax.
