only briefly, visitors you might say, and we cannot take anything with us when
we leave, but we can certainly pass them on to the next generation. Nurturing
our World, growing it, and leaving it a better place than when we found it is
at the soul of our characters, not just for ourselves, but for those that must
fill our shoes. Looking after oneself, one’s neighbors, the environment, and
the World, for the short time we are here, is our responsibility and it is how
we give our humble thanks for our lives. We are a family of just such Stewards
-- military veterans, firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and nurses. In fact,
the Owners are a combat infantryman and a tough-as-nails nurse. You probably
have such a hero or Steward in your family too. If you do, then we thank you
for all they did.
The Outpost is a unique and
special place to stay. We created it for a single person, a couple, the family,
several couples, a couple of families, small bachelorette/ bachelor groups, etc., depending on what you plan to do. Preservation of
history is at the core of Stewardship, and to that end, The Outpost is built
from various first responder buildings, military forts, museums, and monuments
from all across Texas. How many times have you walked through a museum with all
of the relics carefully protected with glass barriers, what they must feel
like, their texture, their weight, their smell? There is so much more to
history than just pages in a book or swords
behind glass – much can be learned through touch – so we encourage you to take
things out of their cases; to touch and feel all the items throughout the
cabin. You can interact with a vast number of artifacts by holding, opening,
reading, and exploring them. We hope in some way that we have built a bridge in
history to connect you with the lives of the men and women who sacrificed so
much for the rest of us. 
Stewardship is also about
caring for our land and how we pass it on to our children. The Outpost has a
huge biodiversity and is an active conservation area. Do not pick any of the
cacti or other flora on the property. Many of the flowers are intentionally
propagated by the Owners for the Monarch Migrations as they make their way to
the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico in September through October. The Outpost
is even designated as a Monarch Waystation. Do not kill any of the other
insects, wild turkeys, deer, mammals, reptiles, snails, or any other wildlife,
unless there is an imminent threat or immediate danger. The Outpost has a large
library to research these and many of the other animals/flora you may discover
on the property.
Your Stewardship is also part
of your own personal history at The Outpost. Not only can you explore and care
for the cabin and its grounds, but you can become part of it by leaving behind
a personal artifact, unit patch, pin, insignia, challenge coin, a photo, an
engraved brick, etc., so that you add to the cabin’s rich history. We will take great care in
preserving and documenting your items. 
The Owners have four
children, so we are well-accustomed that accidents happen, things get broken,
kids do dumb things and sometimes things don’t go the way you intended. No
worries, we are used to it. Just let us know so we can fix or replace it –
place the broken item on the island and send us a picture. We put a lot of work into making this a special
place for you, so be respectful, have a blast and create great memories.
Cherish your time here and have as much fun as you possibly can. Take care of

Check-Out Instructions

1.&nbsp; We are one of the few rentals in Fredericksburg that allows ATV's on-site so please follow these simple rules.&nbsp;Absolutely no trailers inside the courtyard area. Drop and unload all trailers
outside the courtyard in the designated area. The designated area is on the
right as you get close to the courtyard gate. All our fences and gates are all custom-designed /custom-made and you will be charged full replacement costs + $150 inconvenience fee for any damages you cause with your trailer inside our courtyard area.&nbsp; The terrain can be very rocky and steep -- be aware that rollovers are very possible. The Owners are released from any liability and the Guest releases the Owners from any harm including any accidents, rollovers, or injuries while you operate your ATV / UTV.&nbsp;2. Observe all Texas State
laws regarding ATV’s/UTV’s. Also, do not consume alcoholic beverages while operating an ATV / UTV. All drivers must be legally licensed/ have the proper safety certificate. 
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ATV’s/UTV’s must be used
off property (except for our driveway) -- please do not tear up our property, erode grading, or run over&nbsp;our vegetation. Keese Rd. has many paths to take so enjoy!

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You can store your ATV/
UTV under the covered barn if you would like.
5.&nbsp; &nbsp; You can rinse of any mud / dirt
off the barn slab.&nbsp;We have a hose on the side of the barn.

lawn grass.

The Outpost Grand ATV Tour Route


 
 Below
 is a Polaris grand tour we often give to our children and friends. It’s a long
 tour and could take you 2 hours or more with all the stops, but it is a great
 way to explore the surrounding areas, enjoy the sights, and go on a local
 picnic. Always follow all state laws and remember to wear your seat belts. Many
 of the roads are windy hairpins so please use caution and drive at your own
 risk. Check your tank – the total round trip is about 18 miles!

 The Outpost main entrance turn left onto Keese Rd. Turn right on Welgehausen
 Rd. On Welgehausen Rd. there are some awesome views of Enchanted Rock you can’t
 get anywhere else. Go to the end of Welgehausen Rd. Turn right onto RR 965. This
 can be a busy road, so stay on the shoulder, if you go on the road like we do,
 then that’s up to you, just make sure you’re wearing your seat belts. Go left
 across RR 965 onto Lower Crabapple Rd. and continue to stay left. Check out the
 historic St. John Lutheran Church
 and the historic Crabapple School, then turn around. Stay left and go down to a
 beautiful part of Crabapple Creek. Go up to RR 965 and turn left. Stay on the
 shoulder, go across, or go on the road, again it’s up to you. Follow this
 awhile and you will pass a vineyard on your left. Keep going and turn left onto
 Keese Rd. Make an immediate left onto Gypsum Mine Rd. There are many scenic
 areas during this drive. Once you see the gypsum mine on your left, stop off on
 the right side of the road. There is a large dirt berm marking the outer
 boundary of the mine and it’s loaded with gypsum crystals. Backtrack the way
 you came and make a left on Keese Rd. Stop off at Crabapple Creek. There are
 lots of rock specimens and sometimes arrowheads. Keep your eye out for cattle
 and wild animals coming down for a drink. Also watch where you are stepping as
 there might be cow poop. Head back to The Outpost when you are done! Enjoy!

ATV Grand Tour Route

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2024/11/vbvkH2c6kHKU4ucVjREJUfNU.jpg">Black Bears are steadily moving back into the Big Bend area of the Trans Pecos, the Hill Country, the Panhandle, and deep Northeast Texas. In fact, Black bears have been spotted all across the Texas Hill Country, and sightings are becoming more common. In 2022, there were 154 confirmed sightings, up from 25 in 2000. On December 23 of 2024, we recorded images on our wildlife trail camera of Black Bears and have also identified their scat on the property. Although appealing and generally harmless, Black Bears can injure humans when provoked and should be treated with caution. Black Bears tend to act more like goofy raccoons, and they are only after your food. They are on the endangered species list and you are prohibited from injuring or killing these animals. It is also illegal to hunt Black Bears. Despite its name, the Black Bear's coat can be jet black to cinnamon brown, depending on genetic selection in the local population. Adults reach a length of 5 to 6 feet, height at the shoulder of 2 to 3 feet, and weigh 200-300 pounds. Front claws are generally longer than hind claws. The fur is long and coarse. At home in the woods and forests, Black Bears are capable of climbing trees, but adult bears generally prefer remaining on the ground. Although classified as a carnivore, the Black Bear is a true omnivore, opportunistically feeding on a wide range of food items. Analysis of scat (bear droppings) shows that vegetable material almost always comprises over half the bear's diet, with insects and other animals comprising a small percentage. In particular, fresh leaves, fruits, berries, nuts, roots, and tubers are favorite foods seasonally, with insects and small mammals eaten when the opportunity arises. It's easy to see where bears have been. They frequently break the branches of nut-bearing trees while feeding and tear up the ground looking for insects, roots, prickly pear fruit, or tubers. Black Bears in Texas especially relish the succulent base of the sotol plant (Dasylirion). In desert environments, it's common to find partially eaten sotol plants where bears have been. Bears will also strip the bark from trees while looking for insects or juicy pulp and will often rub themselves on rough bark. The Bear Necessities: 1.	Never hand-feed or approach bears. Keep a safe distance. 2.	Secure the garbage can lids with the straps. 3.	Remove any food off the porches, picnic area, or around the firepit. 4.	Do not leave food in your vehicles. 5.	Do not leave coolers outside. 6.	Do not leave dog food outside. 7.	Clean off the grills and remove the waste. Close grill lids. 8.	Bears can climb, so the gates/fences will not keep them out of the courtyard.

Burn Bans and Red Flag Warnings

Outpost is no exception. The heaviest times of cedar pollination are January
and February. We’ve taken the time to clear out much of the cedar directly next
to the cabin, but its impossible to mitigate cedar pollen as it can travel
hundreds of miles. We use HEPA filters in our A/C system and housekeeping also
uses HEPA filters. The good news is that cedar is a natural mosquito repellent and there are no mosquitoes at The Outpost!

Please note that everything is winterized with heating blankets, insulation, and heat wire. Here are some tips to consider:1. If the water pressure turns into a trickle, its becuase the cold weather either frooze the water softener, or tripped the water well pump breaker. Both have quick solutions so please call us at: 832-375-5411, or after hours at: 830-271-4130.2.&nbsp;If the outside temperature is below 33° degrees,
please switch the&nbsp; A/C from. ‘Heat’ to ‘Em Heat.’ The outdoor heat pump does not work
very well in freezing temperatures. The backup. ‘Em Heat’ pump is in the attic,
and you will notice that it blows much lighter than the outdoor heat pump. To
do this, select ‘Mode’ on the bottom left of the thermostat until you see, ‘EM
Heat.’3. There are two&nbsp;ice scrapers in the kitchen island drawer.4. Keese Rd. can ice over -- completely. You will need to drive about 5 miles an hour as no crews can make it out safely to de-ice or to clear the road. Also, RR965 can freeze over all the way to Cross Mountain.5. There is plenty of firewoood for the indoor fireplace. It works so well that it can heat the entire kitchen &amp; living room!6. Cold Weather Tips

COTTONTAIL BUNNY HABITATS
The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit is very common throughout the
Texas Hill Country. You may come across a nest of baby bunnies – please do not
disturb them! In fact, there is one in the middle of the firewood rack. This is
nest of Eastern Cottontail bunnies and they have not been abandoned nor are
they in any danger. In fact, many wild animals call The Outpost home as they
know predators will stay away from humans. You will see the 2 mothers running
about on the driveway and on the lawn at night. You may observe and photograph
them, but please minimize any disturbance. Also, please be watchful of your
dogs as they will be attracted to their smell and may attempt to pick them up. 

Here Are A Few Cottontail Facts:

 <li>These are wild animals – they are not domesticated
 rabbits.</li>
 <li>Baby rabbits are very cute and it is natural to
 want to handle them; however, they are very easily stressed by handling
 and noise. Any undue stress can cause them to have heart failure. &nbsp;</li>
 <li>Rabbits will still care for their babies even if
 they have been touched by human hands.</li>
 <li>Mother rabbits only nurse their babies for
 approximately 5 minutes twice a day.</li>

You may see what appears to be fur on the walls or trees during the hotter months of June, July &amp; August -- do not disturb these! They are actually huddled masses of non-poisonous daddy long legs (Harvestmen) and that is not fur -- they are legs -- thousands of them!&nbsp;They are classified as arachnids, but they are not spiders; rather, they are&nbsp;opilionids. Unlike spiders, they have a fused body, they&nbsp;lack silk, they have no fangs, and do not possess any venom glands.The reason they are huddling is to create a microclimate of moisture during hot days. This is normal, natural behavior to keep themselves from drying out.If you disturb them, they will unhuddle and the entire area will be covered with thousands of them. DO NOT TOUCH AND DO NOT KILL THEM -- AND PLEASE DO NOT SPRAY THEM WITH ANYTHING!These insects are highly beneficial in maintaining balance in our ecosystem by keeping down scorpions, fleas, flies, ticks, fire ants, silverfish, termites, and other harmful insects. Also, their bodies are too large to infiltrate the weather seals throughout the cabin so they cannot get inside. Please pay attention to burn bans and the high winds. Use the firestarter
bricks to light a fire – do not use gasoline (you can use lighter fluid). Please use only the firewood
that is provided – you may also use wood that has fallen to the ground. Do not
cut limbs or cut trees. Do not throw ammunition or pressurized cans into the
firepit. Do not place metal or glass in the firepit – these will not burn.
Please spray down the firepit with water when leaving. Always place the screen
back on when finished with the firepit. Never throw ashes or wood into the
garbage cans. Leave all ashes and wood in the firepit so the cleaning crew can
dispose of them properly. An ash can is provided in case the firepit becomes
too full.

You will need to hike 2 miles to the lake, so you will need to pack in all&nbsp;of your gear. are several Gray and Red Fox dens along the fence lines and surrounding areas at The
Outpost. You may come across holes in the ground, such as to the right of the
courtyard gate – please leave these holes alone. The foxes can be viewed
running across the driveway at night, or around the bird seed feeder.&nbsp;The foxes are not a threat to
humans, and they provide a huge benefit of hunting mice and rats. They are also
fun to watch when they are playing! P.S.: They will eat dog food if it is left
outside!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

All gates are manual due to the environmental conditions at our
 elevation. They all have slide bars to close them, and tie backs in case you
 need to keep them open. There are solar lights to illuminate the location of
 the sliding lock bars at night.

Please keep the Courtyard Gate closed as much as possible to keep out the
 livestock. Our cattle will be grazing during the months of October 1 through March 31.

Nothing! The hot tub is cleaned,&nbsp;drained, shocked, and treated on a regular maintenance
schedule with a certified professional. We use bromine tablets because they have less odor
than chlorine and are not as irritating.&nbsp;There is also a small skimmer net in the stairs for surface particles.&nbsp;Please note you will be charged an extra $40 if you befoul&nbsp;the hout tub and it requires a draining / sterilization. Let us know IMMEDIATELY so we can send our tech up there right away to clean it. If you befoul the hot tub and leave without notifying us, you will be charged $40 plus full remediation costs, plus any other fees from damage, labor,&nbsp;or inconveience to the next Guest. tub water (and even the indoor tub water in the guest bathroom) so we wanted to

Iron, manganese, and calcium carbonate from limestone are
all common minerals that can cause water to range in color from red and orange
to green and blue. You may have noticed the lakes and rivers in the Texas Hill
Country have a&nbsp;stunning teal / turquoise / emerald color – that’s because of
the limestone that is so prevalent throughout the area!

into the Hickory Sandstone Aquifer. The water from this aquifer runs over ancient
limestone and granite. As the water passes over the limestone, the rock is worn
down over time, and the minerals from the limestone are dissolved into the
water causing it to turn into a beautiful teal / turquoise / emerald color which you may
notice in the hot tub.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2024/2/I2w3-a_OQlWqvjQzM5FswWhX.jpg">
Also, these same minerals cause the water to have a sweet
taste – go ahead and try some from the water dispenser in the refrigerator –
you will not taste better water!
&nbsp;And&nbsp;Here Are The Hot Tub Rules:
1.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Unfasten all clips before removing the hot tub lid.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No eating, bleach, soaps, sun block, detergents, makeup, lotions,&nbsp;or oils in the hot tub. 
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No animals&nbsp; in the hot tub.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Children
are not allowed in the hot tub unsupervised.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Always
use the buddy system while in the hot tub.
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do not
use the hot tub if you are pregnant.
7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bubbles
are provided, please do not contribute yours.
8.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Because of entrapment
possibility, remove cover completely before entry of bathers.
9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To avoid injury,
exercise care when entering or exiting a spa or hot tub. 
10. No sitting on the lid. Do not allow people
or pets to stand or sit on the cover.&nbsp;Do not use the lid 
as a table. You will be charged full replacement costs (about $550) if you bend, crack, or otherwise damage the lid.
11. The hot tub can take up to 24 hours to reheat up to 103 degrees if it was drained for cleaning purposes.
12. Do not open the access panel – you
could get electrocuted.
13. Do not bring small objects in
the hot tub – they can clog the jets.
14. Do not drain the hot tub – call the
owners if there is a water issue.&nbsp;
15. No
diving, jumping, or dunking in the hot tub.
16. Prolonged immersion
in hot water may induce hyperthermia (several
degrees above the normal body temperature of 98.6°F).
17. People
with infectious diseases should not use the hot tub.
18. Do not use the hot tub immediately following strenuous exercise.
19. If you light the firepit, make sure
the firepit screen is in place. This cuts down on ash going into the hot tub.
20. When not in use, put the hot tub
lid on, fasten all 4 clips, and place rocks on all 4 corners.21. If the water drops below the jets, please refill until 1 inch above the jet.&nbsp;22.&nbsp;Scorpions like the hot tub – remove
the lid cautiously. We spray regularly but some get through. There is a net in
the hot tub stairs along with scorpion spray – use the spray for the sides of
the hot tub if needed.23. Please do not adjust or turn the waterfall dial (the one close to the waterfall). It is preset for filtration purposes.


Try
These Steps If The Hot Tub Is Not Heating Up:
1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Do not heat the hot tub past 103 degrees.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
If
the water is changed it will be about 70 degrees, and it takes about 20 hours
to warm up the tub to 100 degrees.
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Make sure the lid is secure. The hot tub will
cool off if the lid is left open. 
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
During winter months the hot tub will take
longer to heat up.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
We have an immersion heater stored in the barn to speed up the heating process. Please call us if you need this
item and we will make the necessary arrangements. 
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Look at the display – do you see the
temperature? If not, push the up arrow and the temperature setting will

Water Level:
If
needed, please add water so that the water level is always above the top jet.
Operating jets without water pressure can break them. Add water 6 to 8 inches
below the top edge of the hot tub. Do not overfill, as the hot tub's water level will rise

Hunting

We run a tight ship at The Outpost to make sure everything
goes as planned during your stay! Every single appliance is checked, and all
maintenance services at The Outpost run on a set schedule, such as lawn cutting,
A/C servicing, generator checks, firewood restocking, propane refills, water
well servicing, etc. We will always try
to schedule these activities during regular housekeeping hours of 11am
check-out and 4pm check-in. 
In the event that there is a critical repair that must be made, such as the HVAC system, we may need to schedule a technician during your stay.&nbsp;The Owners, Lori and Mike Carew, will advise you when
someone is expected to be at the cabin to perform repairs. If a
contractor/vendor needs access inside the cabin, then we will obtain your permission
first. If access is needed outside the cabin, such as for a fallen tree, then we will also obtain your permission in advance. You awalys have the right to decline and we will schedule another time. If we do have your permission, then we will work with you on a time that best fits everyone's needs.

Maintenance At The Outpost

Here are a few reminders regarding our no hunting policy:
The
wildlife on the property is abundant and here for your enjoyment. You are
prohibited from hunting or discharging firearms at The Outpost. You are also
prohibited from target practice or bow hunting. This is a liability issue if
someone is injured or killed due to a firearm/ bow while renting the property.
In
addition, for safety &amp; compliance reasons, the Game Wardens will be called
if firearms/bows are discharged. If we receive a report that you have illegally
poached on our property, your reservation will immediately end, you will be
escorted off the property, and will not receive any refund of any sort. You might
also be arrested or have charges pressed by the Game Wardens if they deem it necessary.

Additional Details:1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
Outpost is not in any line of fire, nor near any line of fire. 
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Texas
whitetail hunting season is from November to January. You will hear rifle fire
in the distance during these months.
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
are no known still/ stalking hunters in the area. The hunting in the area is
done by stand only.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; November
– January: When down by the canyon, do not venture left past the yellow, ‘No
Trespassing’ sign on the trail.&nbsp;

6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When
out by the field, do not walk left near or in front of the second stand, which
is the farthest one away. The stand closet to the road labeled, “Checkpoint
Charlie,” is for wildlife observation and belongs to The Outpost.

portable fire pits on the parking lot due to the mess. Use the on-site grills
for cooking and use the on-site fire pit for chilling out.

You
must clean up any motor oil drips.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Place
all adapters back into the RV Equipment Bag.

the green sewer cap cleanout for black or gray water.

types of minerals in Llano and the surrounding counties brings an entire new
meaning to picker’s paradise.&nbsp;Llano sits directly on the Llano Uplift, a geologic dome exposing 1.5-billion-year-old Precambrian rocks. Spots -1. A popular, free public swimming hole and granite outcropping on the Llano River located off Ranch Road 3404 in Kingsland, Texas. Perfect for&nbsp;flint, chert, quartz, and unique xenolith formations.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/uGMdJsbz0dzGs5yE-Ny9X7Ah.jfif">Llanite, a rare blue quartz found only in&nbsp;Llano Texas.Llanite Outcropping - Located on Texas State Highway 16, about 9 miles south of Llano (just past Baby Head Cemetery) is&nbsp; a publicly accessible&nbsp;outcropping of llanite on the side&nbsp; of the road. It&nbsp; is located on the crest of a ridge where a llanite dike crosses Highway 16, forming a prominent outcrop on both sides of the road.&nbsp;There is a small gravel pullout on the side of the road next to the roadcut where you can park. Bring a rock hammer, safety goggles, and gloves -- it is an extremely hard rock.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/Es7IuPeEt5xKn63Pky64nXRa.jpg"> Gypsum Crytal Mine (the Natural Gypsum Company) -&nbsp;You can gather very large gypsum crystals off the side of
the road near the gypsum mine. From The Outpost, turn right and go
down Keese Rd. Turn right on Gypsum Mine Dr. and follow it for about 4 ½ miles.
The best spot is on the right side of the road. Make sure you only gather
crystals on the public right-of-way and do not trespass onto the mine’s property.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/p3k4EMSxzBJohhLngsygfHMt.jpg">The Gypsum Mine is partially visible from the road.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/npWeMPa5BIdbW3YIQkMgccKs.jpg">A gypsum crystal.Pink Granite -&nbsp;Pink granite is what makes this area so beautiful, and The
Outpost has some big specimens of pink granite on both sides of the front porch
steps. When you leave The Outpost, turn left and stay on Keese Rd. You will
pass Keese-Sagebiel Rd. on your left. Shortly after that, you will drive up a
steep hill and you will need to stay on your right. On the other side of the
hill, there is a nice oak tree with a pink granite outcropping. Do not park on
the right side of the road once you go over the hill – turn around and park a
good distance from the tree. Stay on the right of way and do not go onto
private property.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/AJp1BMamMElUhCIygXg0pE9K.jpg">The granite outcropping.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/lu0JCdk9E8eblRmni_vw6wlg.jpg">Pink granite samples.Crabapple Creek - Right off of RR965 is Crabapple Creek. The public right-of-way areas 25 feet to the left and right of the bridge are accessible - any further and its private property. The rock is made up of granite, limestone, schist,&nbsp;gneiss, and quartz. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/M2oZhdxpezvAp6-KF8mkEkxp.jpg" width="496" height="366">Crabapple Creek. On-Site at The Outpost:The Outpost has numerous types
of geological specimens, fossils, and Native American Artifacts. You can find
limestone shell fossils such as spiral, bivalves, and coral samples. Also
plentiful at The Outpost is flint, quartz, jasper, and Texas agate, which is common
down the path towards the cliffs.&nbsp; &nbsp;There are
numerous Native American Comanche artifacts, probably due to the abundant deer, turkey,
and small game, as well as the creek in the canyon. Arrowheads, spearheads and
pottery have all been found at The Outpost. 
Please note there are&nbsp; 2 Indian burial mounds on property, most likely Comanche. To protect the mounds we have not marked them and we cannot&nbsp; tell you where they are located. It is not
confirmed that these are burial mounds, but in typical burial fashion in hard
rocky areas, they are above ground, near trees, they are aligned to face West
towards the canyon into the setting Sun, and they face where there is a body of
running water. We are not disclosing the location, but if you discover them, please
exercise the utmost respect and under no circumstances are you to disturb, dig
around, or remove any of the burial stones – this is a felony offense under The
Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Any objects,
arrowheads, pottery, etc., that you find in that burial area MUST NEVER BE
TOUCHED OR REMOVED!<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/DqXgjZB_OUUqCiJb90DEQt1v.png" width="496" height="377">Samples of specimens found at The Outpost.Texas Agate &amp; Jasper -&nbsp;Texas is famous for its rich deposits of agate and jasper. Both stones belong to the microcrystalline quartz family known as chalcedony and share a hardness rating of 7 on the Mohs scale.&nbsp;Agate: Translucent or transparent, showing light through the stone. It often features distinct color bands, fortifications, mossy patterns, or plumes.&nbsp;Jasper: Completely opaque, blocking all light. It typically displays rich, solid, or mixed earthy colors like red, brown, yellow, and green due to mineral impurities.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/KWFlFlE8LSSeTNk1EKb4wa89.jpg">Polished samples of agate and jasper found on property.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2026/7/fsEZShN5QScPSbDLu2dKXR_g.jfif">A polished piece of jasper.

Rock Hounding

Be
Aware of Scorpions!<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/folio-media-production/2024/2/wBaStsUy56YZKNXaIUn0ldPj.jpg">
Yer out in the country so there’s all kinds of varmints out
here! The most common scorpion in the area is the Striped Bark Scorpion
(pictured above). Scorpions are nocturnal
creatures as are many of the animals at The Outpost. Although we treat the
yard, patio, and inside the cabin for scorpions, there are some that always get
by. The
sting of a
scorpion is said to be a bit worse than a bee sting, but unless one is
allergic, no medical attention is typically necessary.&nbsp;Although we
spray the yard and the house, as well as lay out glue traps, some scorpions
might still get by (we have also planted lavender in the garden, as well as
place lavender sachets in many drawers, as an herbal preventative for scorpions).
Here’s a few hints to be aware of:
1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Never&nbsp; walk
barefoot in the grass.
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We
have provided a UV flashlight for scorpions at night. They will glow
ghost-white when exposed to the UV flashlight (depicted below).
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Check
yer boots.
4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shake
off bath towels / blankets before using.
5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Be
careful when handling firewood – examine each piece.
6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Scorpions
can run fast, and they strike very quickly.
7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
is a sting kit and sting spray in the master bathroom inside the cupboard.

Water &amp; Gas Shut Off Valves:
The Outpost has a propane tank which is used for the gas stove. If you smell gas, please make sure the stove is turned off and then exit the cabin and shut off the main line.If you see, smell or hear a propane leak, report it immediately by calling the Vapo 24-hour hotline at&nbsp;800-469-1040. In an emergency, always dial 911.In the
event that you may need to shut off the water or propane gas mains, here are

Weather Station

Wildlife At The Outpost

It can get pretty windy up at The Outpost! Measured gusts
can easily hit between 20 - 30 mph. Please do the following to protect items:
1.&nbsp;This is a German-pioneer
cabin with a metal roof – it will make sounds during high winds.
2.&nbsp;Never leave the front and
back doors open at the same time – they will slam shut and scare the crap out
of you.
3.&nbsp;Push doors firmly closed
until you hear a click.
4.&nbsp;Always flip chairs down when
not in use.
5.&nbsp;Do not leave any lightweight items outside.
6.&nbsp;Keep the firepit lid in
place.
7.&nbsp;Strap down items with the bungee
cords.
8.&nbsp;Keep the garbage lid strapped
down.
9.&nbsp;Be mindful of cigarettes and
cigars.
10.&nbsp;Keep vehicle windows rolled
up.
11.&nbsp; &nbsp;Keep doors closed and
deadbolts locked.

The Exterior

with guest access. The panel is located in the laundry room. Instructions on
setting &amp; disabling the system are located on the laundry room shelf.
We also have a security camera on the courtyard gate pointing&nbsp;down the driveway,
away from the cabin, to ensure no unwelcome visitors show up. There is also a game
trail camera in the deer feeder pointing away from the cabin, and another game
trail camera at the southeast corner of the fence-line pointing towards the woods away from the cabin. We are monitoring wildlife in the area as it
is abundant and we are keeping an eye out for any nocturnal predators. Please
let us know if you wish for these to be disabled during your stay and we can

Can’t Connect  To The Internet?

We have some fancy-dancy fans up in here so try the
following if you can’t get the fans to work: 

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Flip fan
wall switch up and wait 1 second, fan will kick on. If it does not, then
someone changed a setting on the remote (a.k.a. fan receiver).
2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Remotes are
white and mounted on the wall.

take to restore service:

1. Press the "HOME" button 3 times on the DISH remote to go
to the Diagnostics screen.
2. Use your arrows on your remote to navigate to option
#3, titled "Dish" on the left-hand side.
3. At the bottom of the screen, verify the word
"locked" appears in green text and skip to step 5. If "not locked" appears in red text instead,
navigate over and select the box that
says "Tuner" with a 0 next to it,then select 1 when the numbers appear.
4. At the bottom of the screen, verify the word
"locked" appears in green text and skip to step 5. If "not locked" appears in red text instead,
navigate to the box that is named
"Satellite" and then select 110 from the list that appears.
5. Once the green "Locked" text is
shown at the bottom of the screen, select "Test Installation" on the right-hand side of
the screen.
6. Pop-up 058 will appear, and a progress bar
will complete (this step will take about 5 minutes to complete).
7. If pop-up 836 appears, select
"Save" and then select "save" again on the next pop up screen.
8. Verify 119 and 110 are present in the grid,
and both have green check marks.
9. Locate the red "reset" button on
the front of your Hopper receiver. Press that red button once, and your TV will go to a black
screen. The box will begin to reboot, and you will see "Hopper 3 Starting
Up" (this step will take about 5 minutes to complete).
10. A message that says "acquiring satellite
signal" will appear on the screen. Wait for this step to complete (this step will take about 5 minutes to complete).

Dogs And The Outpost

PLEASE CRATE YOUR DOGS!
Dogs
can get anxious if they are locked up in an unfamiliar room and they are unable
to leave. They will claw and scratch to escape. Therefore, you must crate your
dog(s) if you wish to leave them alone in the cabin when you go out-and-about for
the day. There is an extra-large and a small dog crate in the master closet that
you may use. Please restow when you are finished using the crate. You will be
responsible for all costs for repairing and/or replacing anything damaged by
your dog(s). Since all the wood in the cabin is 200 – 250 years old, and the
doors are custom-made, this can get very expensive for you. We love dogs, and
we don’t want to prohibit yours from coming to The Outpost, but if scratch damage keeps
happening then we will have no other choice but to exclude dogs. Here’s some
pics of damage from several different previous guest stays, who left their dogs
in the cabin without crating them:

Dog Crates

Wind
vs. Doors:
Please do not leave both the front door and back door open
at the same time. The wind (mainly from the southwest) will slam them shut in a
violent manner that can damage the door jam, hinges, door hardware, and even
break the glass.

Door Slamming

As you explore the cabin, you may find hidden rooms,
secret doors, riddles, and treasure caches, collectively known as ‘Easter
Eggs.’ If you figure out how to open the caches, you get to keep one of the
small prizes inside each. Also, there are some Easter Eggs with no treasures,
they are just fun games to play. Some of the items are hidden inside other
objects, while others may be in plain view. Items marked empty have nothing in them. Do not force open any of the caches
– everything you need to solve the Easter Eggs is in the cabin. Please do not
photograph or post what you find as this would spoil the experience for other
guests (they are supposed to be secrets!) Use your camera on the QR code on
each cache if you need a hint or want to show us what you found. Also, there is
1 public Geocache on the property with additional treasures. Enjoy!

TV App Tip:
You may be prompted to enter a pin when using the Netflix, Amazon, or
other TV apps. This means that a prior guest did not log out of their account.
Simply log out and log back into with your own username and password. Please
also remember that DISH TV is also available for you to use. If that does not
work, then use pin 54321.

DVD Player:

1. Turn on TV.
2.&nbsp;Select Home then scroll right to gear
icon &amp; select.
3.&nbsp;Select inputs then select HDMI 1.
4.&nbsp;Turn on DVD Player (Brand: Dr. J.).
5.&nbsp;Use remote to play (volume: Insignia
remote).

Wii:
1.&nbsp;Turn on Wii.

Outdoor Speakers:
1. Turn on your phone Wi-Fi &amp; Bluetooth.
2. The Pyle Receiver is located directly under the TV left side. Turn on
the receiver by pushing the ‘Standby’ button.&nbsp;
4.
Select Bluetooth from the ‘Input’ button on receiver and it will show as ‘br’.
5. Go to
your Bluetooth settings on your phone and connect to the device named
‘PyleUSA.’
7. Go to
your playlist and select your music.
8. Push
in the receiver’s Surround Sound button to ‘On’.
9. There
are 2 volume controls, 1) on the receiver, and 2), on each wall next to the
doors.

Barn TV:
1.&nbsp;Remotes
are in the back pocket of the TV cover. If you need new batteries, then they
are in the island drawer in the kitchen.
2. Turn
on TV (Brand: VIZIO). If you are prompted to set up the internet, select
‘Cancel.’
3.&nbsp;If
DISH satellite service does not automatically come on, then use the DISH remote
to select ‘SAT’ or ‘Yes’ for Live mode.
4.&nbsp;Drink
beer and enjoy the game!

original, handmade German Cuckoo Clock – it is a functional clock, it is very
expensive and it is not a toy. It is for display only so please do not touch it

Make sure the ice-maker lever in
the freezer tray at the bottom of the refrigerator is in the down position so
it can make ice. Sometimes it is accidently left up which stops it from
producing ice. Also, please use the scoop to take ice out of the bin.

If you do any of the above things, you
will break the support bar and the folding mechanism. These parts cannot be
replaced, and an entire new sleeper sofa must be purchased. This has already
occurred once.
If you break the sleeper sofa, you
can be charged up to $1,300 to your card on file. This will pay for the sofa,
delivery, installation, and disposal of the old sofa. Thank you.

Sleeper Sofa Instructions

Smoking, vaping, candles, and burning incense are
prohibited inside the cabin. Do not flick your cigarette butts, matches, or
cigar stubs over the fence – you will start a forest fire. Please police up
your cigarette butts, cigar stubs, matches, and dipping tobacco (you can throw
them in the fire pit outside and burn them). You will be charged full
remediation costs if we need to hire a professional to remove tobacco or
incense odor from the cabin.

Smoking, Candles, And Incense

The
drawers, cabinet doors, and toilet seats are all soft close devices. They only
need a gentle tap or gentle push to close them. It is normal that they will
move slowly to eliminate slamming.
Please
do not force them to close. If you do, you will force the out grease that is
packed in the resistance cylinder and subsequently damage the cylinder. The
soft close will no longer work, the hinge will have to be removed and
disassembled, and then refilled with new grease. It’s a total pain, so please
allow the drawers, doors, and seats to close slowly. Thank you!

Traditions at The Outpost

Do not throw away broken items in
the trash can – leave them on the island so we can identify/replace them and
send a text message to 832-375-5411. The following items are also prohibited in
the indoor trash cans: liquids, water, grease, oil, firewood, coals, ash,
hazardous materials, uncapped needles, paints, or solvents. There is a large
blue trash can at the barn you can use if the trash gets full, and there are
extra trash bags at the bottom of the trash container. Please fasten the locks
on the blue trash can, otherwise the critters will have a sloppy party while
you sleep.

Trash Can Tips

The Outpost is on its own water well system, with a
2,500-gallon storage tank and a secondary booster pump. There might be lower
water pressure if both showers are being used at the same time, or if the
washing machine / dishwasher is being used at the same time of the showers.

modem's power cord from the wall, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging it back
